How to flush a tankless water heater step by step
1. Turn off power or gas and let the unit cool
Start by turning off electrical power at the disconnect or breaker. For a gas tankless water heater, close the gas shutoff valve as well. Do not work on a hot unit. If it has been running, allow it to cool down before connecting hoses or opening service ports.

2. Shut off the cold-water supply and hot-water outlet valves

Connect the second hose from the hot-water service port and place its loose end back in the bucket. This creates a closed loop: solution moves from the bucket, through the heater, and back to the bucket.
Make sure hose connections are snug, but do not overtighten them. Keep the bucket on a stable, level surface. A loose hose can turn a simple maintenance job into a water cleanup.
4. Add descaling solution and circulate it
Add the amount of approved descaling solution called for by the manufacturer. If vinegar is allowed, use undiluted white vinegar and avoid scented or colored varieties. When the circulation period is complete, turn off the pump. Carefully dispose of the used solution according to the product directions. Then reconnect the cold-water side so clean water can rinse the heat exchanger.
With the hot-water service hose directed into a bucket or safe drain location, briefly open the cold-water supply and flush clean water through the unit. Continue until the water runs clear and there is no remaining odor from the descaling solution. The exact rinse procedure varies by manufacturer, so use your manual as the authority here.
6. Restore normal operation and check your work
Close the service ports, remove the hoses, and open the hot- and cold-water isolation valves. Check every connection for drips. Restore electrical power and reopen the gas valve if applicable.
Run a hot-water fixture for several minutes to purge air from the line and confirm normal operation. If the heater does not fire, shows an error code, or delivers inconsistent water temperature after flushing, turn it off and schedule service. Do not repeatedly reset a unit that is signaling a problem.
